About the paper

A weekly record of politics, culture, and the life in between.

The Foundational Report is an independent newsletter. It is written by contributors who live where the story is, and edited by one person who has to stand behind every line before it reaches you.

How it works

One desk, one decision

Every submission is read in full by the editor before it can appear anywhere on this site. There is no automatic publishing, no scheduled post, and no second path in.

Notes, not silence

If a story is sent back, the writer receives the editor’s note in the studio and by email. Rewrite and resubmit as many times as it takes.

The stamp means something

The editor-verified mark on a story records that the claims were checked against the record as it stood on the day of approval.

Editorial standards

Contributors keep their own voice. The editors keep the facts. Where a writer and an editor disagree about a verifiable claim, the claim waits.

Corrections are published at the top of the story, in plain language, with the date they were made. We do not silently edit published work.

We take no money from the subjects of our reporting. Funding comes from readers who choose to subscribe to the letter.

Write for us

Writers are invited by the editor and work in the studio: you file a story, it goes to the review queue, and the editor approves it, sends it back with notes, or holds it. Nothing you write is visible to readers until it is approved.
